Migration

Research Through Practice Final Project

2. Design a system capable of generating questions/propositions/provocations of research significance and present this system (or a record of its outcomes) as ‘authentic’ research undertaken by a human practice-led research team. (= Hardware component).

To see a mechanical description of the project, please see System Description page on this blog. This system we have designed should be capable of generating the following questions/provocations/propositions of research significance:

QUESTIONS-

What language is being spoken?

What is the person on the projection trying to communicate?

What common prompt links all the words being spoken?

What is the link between the boat and the projection?

What initiates the movement of the boat?

What is being mapped by the green post-it notes?

Why are they blank, and is this of significance?

PROVOCATIONS-

What is the visual impact of the project on the contemporary concept of migration?

How does the fact that words are randomly generated effect the notion of geographical salvation?

What symbolism does the form of the boat embody and how does it reflect contemporary migration?

What does the the movement of the boat in seemingly endless and random circles imply about the motivation of contemporary migration?

How does the interaction of the boat with the bitmap and the bitmap to subjective interpretations of migration speak to the reality of contemporary migration?

PROPOSITIONS-

We propose that through this research new knowledge of how interdisciplinary artwork can be created very quickly to address urgent and complex contemporary concepts.

We propose that through the provocations and questions raised by this project, new knowledge can be created about the circumstances of global contemporary migration.

We propose that through juxtaposition of generative device and subjective interpretation, artwork can be created that transcends the possibilities of both.

We propose that this authentic research is just that because it contains elements of both and is thoroughly grounded in both the context of migration art and the context of generative artworks.
