Beth’s Reflections…

What method has been used?

I feel that we have used methods of craft (the boat), technology (interfacing, video, etc), and something along the lines of sociology (the interviews).

What is being researched?

Several things are being researched…how individuals from different countries and cultures respond to the word ‘migration’, how the piece will interact with itself, how the boat relates to the video clips…how to make a piece like this in the first place.  As the piece is left to randomly generate video after video, an interesting pattern of sound and vision will develop, and I feel that we are inquiring about the aesthetics and/or relevance of the outcome.  Further questions concerned with aesthetics that interest me are ‘what are the visual pathways the boat is making, and does that/can that relate to the ideas embedded in the project as a whole?’ ‘if the boat’s pathway was recorded, would there be a further step needed to find value and context with the information, and if so, what would it be?’  I feel that this project could be continued infinitely.

What has been learned?

Interfacing, (model) boat building, the role of the curator, the role of the artist, the different faces we must put on for different parts of the project, coming to conclusions in group situations.

What new knowledge was produced?

I’m not sure if we’re producing a new knowledge that can be fully articulated at this point…from a psychology point of view, I feel that the interviews provided useful insight into the individual’s views and perhaps cultural views as well.

Did we encounter failure?

I will save this one to answer after the presentation…
