Migration
Research Through Practice Final Projectsystem description
phase one: interviews
we asked random people to come up with a list of 5 – 10 words that they subjectively associated with the concept of migration in their own languages. We asked then asked them to translate these words. We then asked them to speak them into a camera. These interviews were shortened to one-word clips, left untranslated.
phase one and a half: making the boat
we created a boat out of cardboard base and light wood that could be fitted on an existing mechanical structure. The sails were made from very old paper belonging to Beth’s grandfather. The mechanical structure was chosen because of its patterns of movement.
phase two: mapping the digital space
The interview clips were linked into a responsive bitmap. Description of the bitmap during the presentation, how this works and how it relates the the floor.
phase three: interaction
viewers are invited to observe as the boat triggers different video clips giving subjective interpretations of migration and to reflect on the impressions left by the work. This reflection is the generated research of our project.
